Labour Students works closely in partnership with Community Trade Union

It is over 100 years since the Labour Party was founded by the Trade Union movement. In Labour Students we are proud of the strong and historic link between the Labour Party and its affiliated Trade Unions, and we are especially proud of our own link with Community. Community is a modern union for a changing world. Founded in 2004 when the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation and the Knitwear, Footwear and Apparel Trade Union joined together, it has since been joined by many other smaller unions. Community was founded from the belief that in a world where the nature of work is ever-changing, the need to stay relevant to workers is vital and is dedicated to make sure that all people, no matter the nature of their work enjoy the protections that a Trade Union offers.

Community Trade Union supports Labour Students in many ways in all the work that we do, from engaging students with the trade union movement to our campaigns on campuses. We’re proud of our connections with the Trade Union movement.

You can join Community Trade Union for as little as £2.69 a month here

Chair of Keele Labour Students, Tom Campbell talks about being a Community member below:

My name is Tom and I’m the Chair of Keele Labour Students, I joined Labour Students in 2015 and since then British politics has seen some of the most exciting events in recent times. Our Labour Club has campaigned to increase voter registration as well as rack up over 1500 campaigning hours this year, helped by two elections in nearby Stoke.

I campaigned up and down the country in the last General Election and it was during this time I saw the value of unions and decided to join Community, my trade union. I joined them for the support that they give Labour Students, and the passion they show in helping those in Britain whose voices have been drowned out by the Tory Government and their determination in ensuring that workers have the rights and support they deserve.

Watching Community target resources to key seats for Labour, turning them into Labour gains, alongside the great work they’ve done in my home nation of Wales to protect jobs in the steel industry was why I knew Community was the Trade Union for me.

Some of the most vulnerable workers in the country are students and Community’s work on protecting our rights is second to none. Community is a modern trade union which seeks to empower working people in order to create better communities for us all. Their Labour Campaign Network brings together students and workers in order to campaign for Labour all year round. Community shares our passion and our commitment to the Labour Party and offers vital protection to those students who are often the most vulnerable workers.
